GUYS GUYS, I can finally show you this piece I worked on for the very mysterious SOCIETY OF KILLUSTRATORS. They assigned me an article about a pretty adorable guy down in Florida who loves mermaids and made his own merperson tail to swim around in.
Go to their website and check out a larger version of the illustration! IT’S WORTH IT, the other piece for this same assignment by The Bubble Process is SO rad.
taylorwork asked: I love the texture in all of your illustrations and lettering! Did you create your own textured brush in photoshop or are they drawn by hand? I'm an illustrator as well and usually create textures by drawing something out by hand and scanning it in. However, I'm trying to experiment with more digital textures.
Oh wow, thank you!! I do a lotttt of mix and match when it comes to my textures and I feel like I’m always learning new tricks.
Generally If I’m feeling super ambitious I’ll scan and print my sketch out to size and create custom texture shapes for each individual block of color.
I used these to create this finished illustration.
BUT really most of the time I make all my shapes in photoshop and use a variety of traditional media brushes that I’ve downloaded from various places. So I’ll have a shape of flat color in photoshop, turn on the “lock transparent pixels” button in the layers palette OR create a clipping mask above the flat color and go in with a slightly transparent brush and sort of.. stamp it? Looking at your illustrations you seem like you know what you’re doing, but if I’m not making any sense I’d be happy to do a more in depth tutorial!
Also I don’t know if you ever play around with the brushes palette in photoshop, but when I learned how to use that to my advantage with other people’s brushes it CHANGED MY LIFE.
OH ALSO: I scanned a pretty textured piece of paper in years ago and turned it to greyscale and now I’ll throw it on top of an illustration in overlay at a lowish transparency. BAM, instant paper texture.
Ahhh I could never give myself a tattoo, but I seriously need that “universe” design at the bottom.
btdubs, I’m going to be taking part in the Role Models show with five million other awesome champs at Light Grey! We’re doing fantasy/D&D illustrations with a slight self portrait twist.
I decided to be an evil cleric, because clerics seem to be the closest to what I am in real life, and then also I wanted to live out my dreams of being a villain. Still trying to nail down a design (and probably should give her a little more likeness to myself), but I’m getting help from my buddy Chance (who is also an awesome champ).
Also pictured: bronchitis.
(via hello emma: drink it in)
I posted an easy cocktail recipe on my blog along with this little gif!
